Research institutions around the world are currently carrying out research in Kafa.  This research is important for the sucessful implementation of the biosphere projects and also to the local people who can use this information to enhance their livelihoods.

•    Forest resources distribution, coffee forest ecology, status and conservation, coffee genetics, coffee diseases

•    Forest, wetland, cattle management, land tenure, land use and planning, participatory forest management, certification, feasibility biosphere reserve, sustainable tourism and conflicts

•    Land cover and GIS mapping, change detection on forest loss, socio-economics, coffee production, economics and biodiversity, minorities and their socio-economics

•    Fauna, flora, biodiversity, medicinal plants, epiphytes, bird ecology, colobus guereza ecology and species status
